Arizona’s most famous attraction and one of the Seven Wonders of the World for its overwhelming size and intricate colorful landscape, the Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular examples of arid-land erosion in the world.  The layers exposed in the steep walls of this famous canyon represent geological time. The park encompasses 1,904 square miles, including 277 miles of Colorado River.  The canyon measures nearly 1 mile deep, averages eight miles across by air, and stretches 260 miles from its northeast border near Utah to its end at the near Lake Mead.

Sunset Crater is the youngest volcano on the Colorado Plateau. The volcano's red rim and the dark lava flows seem to have cooled and hardened to a jagged surface only yesterday. Hike down into Walnut Canyon and walk in the footsteps of the people that lived here over 900 years ago. Under limestone overhangs, the Sinagua built their homes. These single story structures, cliff dwellings, were occupied from about 1100 to 1250.

San Francisco Peaks

At 12,643 feet, the San Francisco Peaks is not only the dominant feature of the forest area we call the Volcanic Highlands, it's also the highest mountain in Arizona.
